Toilet Paper Identified as a Source of PFAS in Wastewater

In March, researchers from the University of Florida announced that toilet paper could be a major contributor of PFAS in wastewater treatment systems. With these findings in mind, we briefly discuss implications and other contemporary consumer products that could serve as PFAS sources.

PFAS (e.g. PFOA/PFOS) are an emerging class of contaminants in Australia. Although manufacturing was phased out in 2002, the persistence of PFAS in the environment has become a significant concern in recent years as more research has become available to regulators. In 2016, Envirolab Group has commenced testing for PFAS.
