Blue Lamington Drive Morning Teas Raise Vital Funds for Asbestos Awareness

MPL Laboratories is proud to have successfully supported and raised asbestos awareness by hosting two Blue Lamington Drive morning teas and information sessions during November 2015.

Staff, visiting clients and friends were thrilled to meet at MPL Laboratories on Monday 16 November and Monday 30 November to support and donate to the Asbestos Disease Research Institute and Support Groups.

As part of their donation, attendees enjoyed blue lamingtons and other “blue” treats prepared by Sue Nash and Lisa Kerr, who graciously volunteered their time and baking skills for such an important cause.

The annual Asbestos Awareness Month is held during November and aims to alert Australians of the dangers of working with asbestos during home renovations and maintenance and educate them about where asbestos might be found in and around the home.

With almost every home and commercial building built or renovated before the 1990s likely to contain asbestos in one form or another, the importance of raising awareness of the dangers of releasing asbestos fibres into the air when renovating or maintaining homes cannot be emphasised enough.

Asbestos can be found under floor coverings such as carpets, linoleum and vinyl tiles, behind wall and floor tiles, in cement floors, internal and external walls, ceilings, eaves, garages, around hot water pipes, fences, extensions to homes, outdoor toilets and backyard sheds. Furthermore, with the increasing popularity of DIY renovations, it is important that homeowners and renovators do learn and understand where asbestos might be found in the home and how best to manage it so that they and family members can protect themselves from being exposed and inhaling asbestos fibres.

These were some of the issues highlighted in a discussion and information session led by Tom Edwards, Occupational Hygiene and Microbiology Supervisor at MPL Laboratories.

Of the $843 grand total raised by Envirolab Group in the 2015 Blue Lamington Drive, $182 was raised by the two Blue Lamington Drive morning teas hosted by MPL Laboratories! This total was further supported by over $700 raised from additional donations received and $111 raised by Envirolab Sydney’s morning on Friday 27 November.

You can still support this cause by donating or leaving a message on our Envirolab Group 2015 Blue Lamington Drive page. Alternatively, you can also contact us by email or call us on 1300 424 344 for further information on the dangers and testing for asbestos.
