Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) testing has been around for over 100 years. In 1908 the Royal Commission on Sewage Disposal in the UK selected BOD5  as the definitive test for organic pollution of rivers.

 

 

Why five days?

This was chosen as an appropriate test period because they considered this the longest time that river water took to travel down the Thames River in England from source to estuary.
