Supporting Firefighter Health: Envirolab Contributes to PFAS Study

Over recent years, Envirolab Sydney has been honoured to support an important initiative led by the South Australian Metropolitan Fire Service (SAMFS), focusing on firefighter health and PFAS exposure.

In 2018–2019, biomonitoring identified elevated levels of two PFAS compounds—PFOS and PFHxS—in some firefighters. In response, SAMFS launched a voluntary PFAS Treatment Program (VTP), where participants trialed two interventions: regular plasma donation and the use of cholestyramine, a medication that binds bile acids in the intestine.

Under medical supervision, 19 firefighters participated in the treatment program. Over a 2.4-year average study duration, Envirolab provided analytical support by measuring serum PFAS levels across multiple samples. The results were compelling—firefighters who received treatment saw annual PFOS reductions of 41% and PFHxS reductions of 32%, with estimated half-lives much shorter than in untreated individuals. In contrast, the observational group (those not undertaking treatment) showed much slower PFAS decline rates.

This collaborative effort between frontline responders, researchers, and laboratories such as Envirolab demonstrates a hopeful path toward reducing the long-term health risks of PFAS exposure.
